Synergizing Discipline-Specific Competencies with Cross-Cutting Key ESD Competencies
In higher education, disciplinary boundaries are firmly established and unconfronted. Every discipline is engaged with equipping students with competencies tailored to their specific fields. Yet, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) calls for the need to go beyond the mastery of one’s discipline and the integration of cross-cutting key competencies such as Systems Thinking, Anticipatory Skills, Normative Understanding, Strategic Insight, Collaborative Abilities, Critical Thinking, Self-Awareness, and Integrated Problem-Solving (UNESCO, 2017). This workshop discusses the nuanced process of integrating these cross-cutting competencies alongside discipline-specific skills. Participants will engage in discussions exploring strategies for navigating this integration, ensuring that students are equipped with both specialized knowledge and the interdisciplinary skills essential for addressing complex sustainability challenges. |
